If you didn't know which was which you couldn't tell. In some circumstances I have found that my FA1.4 has slightly smoother bokeh than my FA1.7; sometimes I have felt that the 1.7 is sharper wide open than the 1.4. But the vagaries of focusing are such that the differences might not have been inherent in the lenses. For practical purposes the lenses have near-identical performance.
